Jisc gives startups a Step Up

06 January 2020

Jisc, the not-for-profit organisation providing digital solutions to education, has developed a health-check for start-up companies in the higher and further education sector.

In collaboration with seed investor Emerge Education, JISC has devised a ‘badge scheme’ called Step Up.

The aim of Step Up is to enable universities and colleges to partner with education technology startups in the knowledge that some due diligence has been carried out and the startup is ‘procurement ready’.

“Edtech startups are innovators. A growing number of them are taking highly creative approaches to solving the big strategic issues facing universities and colleges, such as improving the student experience,” says Jisc.

“Working with a startup while its solution is still in development brings institutions opportunities to influence and shape a product around their own particular needs.

“You can engage confidently with a startup that has passed our step up check, knowing that some due diligence has been carried out and its solution is procurement ready.”

Jisc says Step Up offers a range of benefits tor startups who meet its criteria, including:

  • ·         Speeding up procurement processes with a simple healthcheck assessment
  • ·         Improving visibility to decision-makers with an “assessed by Jisc” badge and comprehensive report
  • ·         Providing access to a community of senior leaders in the sector through exclusive networking events

Step-Up has already been involved in collaborations between Coventry University and Aula, Swansea University and Unitu and University of Roehampton and BibliU.

The Step Up programme costs £175+VAT per month (minimum 12 months) for startup companies in the UK, it includes:

  • ·         Health-check - comprehensive advice and practical support to meet assessment criteria developed together with university procurement,                  legal, and IT experts
  • ·         Visibility - companies that successfully pass the evaluation criteria receive a comprehensive report and can display the “assessed by Jisc”              badge, improving their visibility to sector leaders
  • ·         Access - invitation to exhibit at annual showcase events, and opportunities to participate in networking events with key institutional decision-            makers.

Non-UK companies that want to expand into the UK market can also apply.
